Rally To Be Held Following 16-Year-Old's Death

A clergy council that represents more than 300 African-American churches held a rally in response to the death of a teen who was shot by police.

The African American Council Of Christian Clergy held the rally in North Miami Beach Wednesday afternoon near where the shooting took place.

Church leaders said they want the Justice Department to investigate the shooting. One man said that the teen's death was another indication that North Miami police "shoot first and ask questions later."

On Thanksgiving afternoon, North Miami Beach police responded to a report that a man was walking around an apartment complex at 2150 N.E. 169 St. with a gun. When two officers arrived around 5:30 p.m., they said Denzel Smith, 16 (pictured, above left), who was in a stairwell, pointed a gun at one of the officers. At least one of the officers fired, hitting and killing Smith.

Police have not confirmed how many bullets hit Smith or if one or both of the officers fired their weapons.

Police later found that the weapon was a BB gun. Witnesses have given conflicting reports about what happened before the shooting. Some reportedly said that Smith put down the weapon before he was shot. Police said that none of those witnesses have come forward to make a statement and they "would like to hear from them."

The Miami-Dade State Attorney's Office and North Miami Beach police are investigating the shooting.

Denzel reportedly did not have a criminal record, police said.
